The company says it only earns revenue from subscriptions and ads in the free version of the Hotspot Shield Android app. The company does not log individual user activity, it gathers aggregate usage statistics which it says are used only for troubleshooting. Hotspot Shield collects your IP address, but the service encrypts it temporarily and deletes it immediately upon disconnecting. I'll have a more exhaustive examination of it in a future review, but I'll summarize here. When Hotspot Shield VPN was rebranded under the Pango name, it got an overhauled privacy policy along with the new name. All these other services are certainly points in Pango's favor, but my review focuses primarily on Hotspot Shield's performance as a VPN. I am, after all, looking at VPN services and not privacy suites. This unquestionably gives you more bang for your buck, but it's a trickier prospect for me as a reviewer. Pango's approach is different, since it bundles together existing services with your VPN subscription.

TunnelBear, for example, offers its own RememBear password manager and standalone tracker blocker. Pango doesn't offer those features, but along with your Hotspot Shield subscription you get access to the 1Password password manager, Robo Shield spam call blocker, and Identity Guard identity theft remediation service. Golden Frog VyprVPN lets you use split tunneling to specify which apps use the VPN connection and which do not. NordVPN, for instance, supports multi-hop VPN connections and access to the Tor anonymization network. Some services offer more privacy features on top of VPN protection. That's not a major issue, but I would prefer if the virtual servers were clearly labeled in the app. However, the company has physical servers located in just 20 countries-far short of the 80 countries listed. Pango tells me that 15 percent of its overall server infrastructure is virtual. The service makes use of virtual servers, which are physically housed in one location but configured to appear in a different one. The more countries a VPN company supports, the more options for spoofing your location and the better chances of finding a nearby server when traveling abroad. Again, on the high end, but not the leader. Hotspot Shield has servers in 80 countries. More important is the number of countries served. More servers doesn't necessarily mean a service is better, but it does mean more chances to find a usable server. That's on the higher end, although still short of the 5,700-odd servers from CyberGhost VPN. Pango Hotspot Shield VPN supplies about 3,200 servers for you to choose from. Surfshark, for example, places no limit on the number of devices you can use with a subscription. Many companies are beginning to surpass this, however. ProtonVPN has the best free option among the VPNs I've tested, since it does not place a data cap on free subscribers.Ī single Hotspot Shield VPN subscription lets you connect up to five devices simultaneously. Hotspot Shield VPN Basic users are limited to just one server and a 500MB per day data cap, but can use this free service indefinitely.

Instead, start with a short-term option and see how the VPN works in your home. I still caution against starting with a long-term subscription. Private Internet Access has the lowest annual fee among the macOS VPNs I've reviewed, asking just $39.95 per year. Other services offer even steeper discounts.
Most VPNs offer long term subscriptions at a discount, and Pango follows suit: a Hotspot Shield subscription can be had for $95.88 per year, or $167.76 every two years. Norton Secure VPN, for instance, costs just $7.99 per month. Several services manage to beat that figure. That's far more than the $10.80 per month average for a top-rated VPN service.
